Stories have been told since the beginning of time, mostly through oral tradition until they could be written down.

Storytelling is the art of telling a story, using descriptive language to stir the imagination of the listener, by creating another ‘world’ for them to enter, while you lead them on a journey of adventure, mystery, intrigue, or excitement.

What is a story?

People love stories and they love to hear great stories, but in order to tell a great story, you need to know what makes up a story. Whilst there are many descriptions of a story and many ways of defining everything that makes up a story, there are essentially two core building blocks a story needs.

The first is content and the second is value. Stories are filled with content which can simply be a description of events. The value of the story is what audience gets from listening to a story. A story usually has to have meaning

Types of stories…

Although there are many types of stories such as fables, fairytales, folk tales, legends, myths etc. there are essentially four main types. Bible Stories, Parables, True Stories, and Fantasy Stories.

The power of story…

The power of story, is that it allows you to present information, ideas, concepts, and most importantly truth, to people in a way that they are actually open and receptive to receiving that information and truth.

Most people never like to be confronted with truth. In fact most people are more comfortable believing a lie than being told truth head-on about their lives or their way of living. The power of story, is that we can “cloak” the truth within the story, which people will listen to and by themselves they will be able to receive and discover the truth.

Telling a story?

Telling a good story well, allows you to enter a different space, it seems to transport us, taking us into the “world of imagination”. While we are in the “world of imagination”, telling a story can be an extremely powerful thing as it is very engaging for your audience who become immersed in the “world of imagination” with you and with what you are telling them.

The listening experience…

There is a story listening experience which begins the moment the storyteller says, “I am going to tell you a story…” With any experience that we go through, we are changed in some way. The story listening experience should therefore also change us in someway, but the audience needs to be willing to go on that journey. The following steps are define the listening experience…

  • the audience first gives their attention to the storyteller
  • they then have to trust the storyteller and engage with the storyteller
  • as they listen, they begin to engage with the story itself, actively using their imaginations
  • as the storyteller is telling the story, they become immersed in the “world within the story”
  • finally, having journeyed into the “world of the story” and returned, they are changed in someway.

What makes good storytellers great?

The ultimate, is to tell a story in such a way that there will be a degree of satisfaction to the audience for having listened to the story. Great storytellers remain true to themselves in that they tell stories of the type or in the style that best suits their personality.

Great storytellers tell stories from their heart, in an open and honest way without trying to too hard or trying to be something they are not. They are able to develop an almost instant rapport with their audiences because they really love what they are doing and are therefore comfortable being in front of their audience and engaging with their audience.

Great storytellers give special attention to the following:

  • They have confidence.
  • They practice.
  • They know their story.
  • They are descriptive.
  • They use appropriate narration style.
  • They use expression.
  • They have energy.
  • They use character voices.
  • They engage with their audiences.
  • They fill the gaps.
  • They use props.
  • They wear costumes.
  • And they use visual aids.

Know the greatest storyteller ever…

Jesus was the greatest storyteller that ever lived. And it is so crucial to know Him. Without Christ, we can do nothing of ourselves. It is His strength, His empowering, and His anointing that enables us to do what we need to do and it is by His grace that we have all He has to give us.

Finally, Be Yourself…

We are all created unique. We are all individuals. No two people in the world are the same. And God has given us gifts and talents that are unique to us and often, we are not even aware of what our gifts and talents are. We are His creation, He has given us so much, and we have so much potential. And the secret to all this, is often the last place we look.
