One of the most fulfilling parts of a children’s ministry is having Child helpers in your ministry.

I had attended a children’s ministry teachers training course, A book called “Children of Revival”  was recommended. I finally got the Book and “WOW” what an inspirational book, highly recommended for any children’s church worker.  God spoke and confirmed all that he had placed on my heart, in this book.

The passion for reaching and teaching and impacting children has never left.

A learning curve - What worked best

Our end decision was making different badges for the different teams. We had:

  • “Welcome Team” badges
  • “ Praise & Worship” badges
  • “Helper” badges
  • “Prayer Team” badges.

It would also depend on what age groups you are serving in your ministry. If you have one class from 7 years to 13 years, the size difference are too varied, so it would be better to find a way to address all those age groups.  We decided on ties, but every ministry has their own unique ideas.

We eventually gave the call to those that wanted to take part and get involved. It was an overwhelming response, too many to use all at once.

At first we would SMS those on duty, only to find that it became costly and not everyone would turn up.

Then we tried rosters, and always had mommies phoning to change the rosters.

So we finally came to the decision that there were 12 positions that we could used each service, and we would operate it on a first come first serve basis.

This definitely solved a lot of problems, it showed the committed few, and brought a kind of responsibility to those that made the effort.

On some occasions, especially during holiday time, we found that a lot of the usual helpers were away, so it gave those that came late a chance to serve if there were positions open.

During normal times, there would always be the same committed few coming at least 45 minutes to 1 hour before the service and would always take the praise and worship positions. This gave us an opportunity to explain to them they need to share and allow other kids a chance to take part as well, and so they would do praise and worship every second week, but collect offering or greet at the door the next week. This worked really well.

Our total aim in this ministry is to teach kids to serve others.  Over the years, we noticed kids coming in and just sitting by themselves, waiting for the service to start. Once we got our child helpers team going, we found that they got to know each other and they would start communicating with each other and the kids around them. Give them instructions as to where to sit and what to do. A lot of these kids never get that type of opportunity even at school.

It really brought them out of their shells, and their personalities started to show.

As a leader of this part of your ministry, you need to train someone up that can take over from you, should you be off duty or away from children’s ministry for whatever reason.

You need a person that shares the same vision and passion to teach these children in a way that they must go, so they will not depart from it.

Should you put someone in charge of this ministry that does not see the vision and share the same passion as what you do, this division of your ministry might collapse.

You need to continue to be there for the kids, giving them direction.  As the kids grow and leave the class, you will always get new recruits, which mean you have to continue to direct and correct.

These kids are setting the standard and the example to the rest of the group.

You cannot under any circumstances, have a HELPER misbehaving in front of the other kids, then they will think they can do the same.

You as the adult have to keep directing, teaching and instructing on what they have to do, and explain why.

Do not give Authority to children over adults.

ALL children must respect all adults or people that are older than themselves.

Should a adult be out of bound in their behaviour, that must be addressed by the Pastor or Service Leaders.
